  • It was no ordinary crowd. The sight of it took Tad's breath away - hundreds of people, pushing and hurrying past, all going to see the elephant. The elephant! It passed close to Tad, its side like a wall of rock, grooved with a thousand interwoven wrinkles, the nearest foot thicker than Tad's whole body.
  • That elephant was to change Tad's life. It was to involve him and his friend, Cissie, in a chase that led from Pennsylvania, down the Ohio River, up the Mississippi, up the Missouri, and into Nebraska, by train, flatboat, and steamboat.
  • They were being chased by Hannibal Jackson who wanted the elephant for his own ends and he was determined to get it. And how do you hide a large Indian elephant?
