Very good condition. Very large format. 1881-1887. Three-quarter red morroco leather binding with red cloth boards. Raised bands to spines and gilt titles. 114 exquisite hand-coloured lithograph plates after E. Neale (taken from specimens in the author's possession). Two single-page maps. Originally issued in fifteen parts.
Leather edges rubbed. Titles nice and bright. Bookplates to front endpapers (presented to The Eton College Natural History Museum). Joints professionally strengthened. First blank page of each volume has a reference number written in biro to the lower gutter edge. Scattered foxspots throughout. Most plates are very clean, one or two have a few foxspots. Hinge between Black-throated Diver and Red-throated Diver in volume III is pulled but tight with a little surface paper damage to gutter edge. All plates are present. A beautiful set.
