  • Mike and Caroline, who were first introduced in The Very Hot Water-Bottle, appear again in this new book, but in a country setting. They go to stay with Lady Wattlebury at her Norfolk home and meet her two grandchildren, Eileen and Edward, and a colourful Italian artist, Count Basilio, who owns three horses. One of them, an endearing pony called Slipper, is due to be sold at a market. Caroline will not hear of it and secretly takes steps to hide Slipper until the market is over.
