Welcome to the May 2026 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.
Despite the recent cold and wet weather, the Wye Valley is looking resplendent with spring flowers. We are fortunate with the view from the shop across the river, where we regularly see foxes and deer—and occasionally fawns!
There is currently a road closure further up the valley near Redbrook, which has resulted in a major drop in traffic—and customers. However, we are still open and can be accessed from the Chepstow end of the valley.
The shop has been ticking over well. One notable recent purchase has been a large collection of Observer books, which Maria is steadily working through. Keep an eye on the website if they interest you!
Our article this month is on the well-known children's author Joan Aiken. Lisa has dug out some interesting facts about this author, who was a staple of many childhoods! Enjoy!

Joan Aiken was born in Mermaid Street, Rye on 4th September 1924 to parents Jessie MacDonald and Conrad Aiken who was an American Pulitzer Prize winning poet. She had an older brother John who was a research chemist, and an older sister Jane who was also a writer, so she came from a strong line of academics.
