June 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the June 2020 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

This month there are signs of things returning to a new normality! The first book auctions have restarted, albeit with strict social distancing and online bidding. This has allowed us to start obtaining some new stock in larger quantities. Most of our staff are now back in work, although a little spread out through the building to keep everyone safe.

Just before lock-down we had some flood damage to a couple of rooms downstairs. Once lock-down started we struggled to get quotes for the needed repair work, but this is now slowly changing, and we hope to get the repair work started very soon. At the time of writing this, shops in Wales (selling non-essential items) are still not allowed to re-open to the public. Unfortunately, as Wales slowly comes out of lock-down and shops start re-opening to the public we will not be ready to. We will of course let you know as soon as we are able to do so! In the meantime, please continue to place your orders via the website or telephone. Thank you for your patience.

Lastly, we have launched our new website! Don't worry - it looks exactly the same as the last one! We have needed to update the underlying code and framework the website runs on for some time now; in fact, we started the upgrade project well over a year ago. The new site finally went live last Tuesday (9th June). We had a couple of minor bugs after launch, but the launch otherwise went very smoothly. Please do let us know if you spot any issues. As well as meaning the website now runs the latest stable and secure code, we are now in a position to build some new features we've had in mind for a while. Watch this space...

Dogs contributed by Steve

So I thought this month I’d raise a controversial subject: are you a ‘dog person’ or a ‘cat person’? The nation seems fairly evenly split – so maybe it’s time to wade into this debate from a Stella Books perspective. Whilst we do have some cat lovers here, I think it’s safe to say that the dog lovers are in the majority!

Before the current pandemic, we would regularly have 4 dogs in the office. So, I thought I’d write a little piece about my love of dogs, a short bio on each of our 4 office dogs, and finally try and find a tenuous link to books!

Edward Hopper contributed by Theresa

This book was produced to coincide with the exhibition at the Tate Modern in 2004. I was lucky enough to go to the Tate Modern to see this exhibition and it was stunning! The book follows the life and works of Edward Hopper and would be ideal for an Edward Hopper fan.

So let me tell you a little about him. Edward Hopper was born in 1882 in Nyack, New York. He showed a talent for drawing from an early age, even then playing with light and shadow, a theme he continued throughout his work. He first studied art via a correspondence course but later transferred to the New York School of Art and Design where he studied under the inspirational teacher Robert Henri. Hopper once said of Robert Henri “Few teachers of art have got as much out of their pupils, or given them as great an initial impetus”. Robert Henri was founder of the Ashcan School of Art which was concerned with representing ordinary everyday subjects, people at work and urban scenes.
