Or, for those of you who enjoyed my previous article about our garden visitors, here are “More Garden Visitors” to our garden here in Portugal. Cliff and I have been settled here for a year now and continue to be amazed at the abundance and variety of wildlife we see right outside our back door. Mind you, we have to look very closely on occasions to see the beauty, or some would say peculiarities, of the little creatures that frequent our flowers and the nooks and crannies in the stone walls. The Space Series by W.E. Johns contributed by Adam
I feel it is important to set any science fiction book into the context of the time the book was written. In this instance, the set of 10 books in the Space Series were written before Man had gone to the moon, although plans, I assume, were in motion. The series was published between 1955 & 1963. W.E Johns is famous for his Biggles books, of which there are around 100. He did try his hand at other genres including a couple of romance novels, gardening magazines and books. However, it will always be his children's books for which he is remembered including Worrals, Gimlet, and Steeley. Some of my personal favourites are his Space or Science Fiction novels. As with all W.E. Johns’ books, they are good easy reading yet fast paced novels. Unlike some of the Biggles books... |

| 1st 1942 Enid Blyton's version of 'The Pilgrim's Progress' in which three children have many strange adventures from the City of Turmoil to the Land of Far-Beyond. Full-page b/w illustrations. This copy would make a wonderful gift. Price: £360.00 | 1st 1907. A collection of stories and illustrations which originally appeared in "Little Folks" between 1896 and 1902, during which period most of the numbers of the magazine contained some of Rackham's drawings. 36 tinted line-drawn plates and text illustrations. One of the more unusual Rackham items. Price: £100.00 | Circa 1860 Six volumes in Five ('Ferns' is contained in volume III). Three-quarters calf with green cloth sides. 1 b/w plate plus 282 colour plates. Top edges gilt. Boards are scuffed. Leather binding is rubbed and worn, volumes IV & V reinforced with black tape to front joints. Binding is still tight. Overall, contents are quite handsome. Price: £200.00 | 1st 1977 Large format. Maroon cloth with gilt titles. Volume 1 is Text and Volume 2 contains the plates. A few grubby marks to outer page edges. Wrapper spines are faded. Contained in a very good slip-case that has some scuffing and wear to edges. Price: £125.00 |
