ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND
Carroll, Lewis. Illustrated by Rackham, Arthur. Stock no. 1304375
William Heinemann. 1st. 1907. Very good condition with no wrapper. Alice was the first important and popular work to be submitted to a public process of re-illustration having come out of copyright in 1907. Rackham was the first artist to follow Tenniel and, in doing so, provoked much comment, most of it unfavourable. In anticipating such an attack, Heinemann, with clever advertising and editorship, ensured that Rackham's undeniably beautiful Alice attained a rate of sales which Rackham was never to achieve again. 13 superb colour plates plus 14 b/w drawings. Green cloth with gilt vignette to front cover. Green/white pictorial endpapers. 161 pages. 8x6". Spine and corners bumped. Fading to spine and cover edges. Inscription in ink to half title-page. Foxing throughout. Some hinges are cracked. A nice copy of the first edition. This copy would make a wonderful gift. [R]
