Contents

  • Greylands School is an orphanage, where the girls wear poke bonnets, tippets and cloaks, and where the rules are much in keeping with the uniform. Millicent Lane, the head girl, typifies the resentful attitude of the pupils towards the staff and the institution itself. A new teacher, and a new girl of Millicent's own age, arrive at the beginning of a new term, and each in their own way influences Millicent, starting a ferment that results in a change of spirit throughout Greylands.
