Almost very good condition. Beautifully bound in vellum, with gilt titles and decorations to front covers. Dark leather title blocks to spines, with gilt titles. Considered a definitive work on the history of horn-books. Each volume contains 'facsimile' horn-books/battledores; hidden away in cut-out pages to prelims of book. Volume I contains: 1. A leather-covered oaken horn-book, in Roman letter, stamped with the effigy of Charles II on horseback. 2. An early uncovered horn-book in black letter. 3. An uncovered oaken horn-book of a later period. Volume II contains: 1. A coardboard horn-book. 2. The British Battledore or horn-book. 3. The Royal Battledore. 4. A Later Battledore. Numerous 'cuts', b/w illustrations, some b/w photos and some fold-out pages to go along with the text.
Ex-lib. This copy was presented to the library by Tuer himself, and has an accompanying letter tipped-in to edge of half-title page. Some pages have small ink stamps of the library. Bumping and wear to corners. Some uneven fading/browning to covers. Binding is still strong, but a little chipping to very page edges in places. Page edge browning. All facsimile horn-books are present and contained in correct places at fronts of volumes. Tissue-guard to colour title page is creased and chipped and torn with some loss; also browned. A few grubby margin marks. Still a lovely set of a sought after work!
