In John Le Carre’s thriller Smiley’s People, by which method does Karla ‘come over’ to the West?

Answer to the last Teaser…
The Charles Dickens novel was Great Expectations, and the two characters were Estella and Pip.

On Monday 9th January I am off to Bielby Hearing Dogs Centre near York for a pre-placement week with my new hearing dog Onyx, a cockerpoo!
Onyx will be my third hearing dog. I have waited 17 months for a replacement for Bruno (my number two dog, a Springer Spaniel, mad as a hatter!). At long last my time is here!
All being well I will be bringing her home on Friday13th January. This will be followed by a weekend at home and then a three day visit by my placement officer to get her working in the home. I will post a photo soon so watch this space!
If you would like to read more about my first and second hearing dogs, click here for Abigail, and click here for Bruno.
I recently discovered that J.R.R Tolkien and I have something in common! We share a birthday – 3rd Ja
nuary to be precise. He was born in 1892 in South Africa to English parents – I was born many years later!
This book was written for Tolkien’s children when they were young. The story is reproduced with a typeset transcription on one side and Tolkien’s handwritten story, complete with his illustrations on the other. It tells the story of the eccentric Mr Bliss and his adventures in his new yellow (with red wheels) motor car.

This book is a mine of information about all things London, for example did you know that No 1 Dorset Street W1 was once the home of Charles Babbage, mathematician and inventor of the calculating machine or that Leather Lane EC1 is not derived from the Leathersellers who worked there but from the old French word for hare – Leveroun. – which was probably the name of an inn.

You may remember that in the early summer my family became the proud owners of four Light Sussex chickens. They were too young to start laying before the winter nights drew in, so we were resigned to the fact that we would not see any eggs until Spring next year.
But what did we find in the nest box this morning – two beautiful brown eggs nestling in the straw.
So as you can imagine, we couldn’t resist – it was poached eggs on toast for breakfast – delicious!

This week…
The following lines conclude which novel by Charles Dickens?
“I took her hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place; and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first left the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.”
Bonus points if you can name the two characters involved!
AnswerTeaser on 5th December…
The cover illustration is taken from The Changeling of Monte Lucio – well done, Eileen!
It’s the time of year when children everywhere are dressing in striped towels, old sheets and tinsel to be transformed into shepherds and angels to perform in ‘the Nativity Play’. Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen pay ‘tribute to all those who perform miracles with wire coathangers and stripey towels’ to dress the cast for the annual performance. It certainly reminds me of making angel costumes for my daughters but I never really got the wings to stand up properly perhaps I should have used more coathangers!
