This is a question which until I recently read a web article entitled
“Book fan reveals collection of 15,000 Penguin paperbacks”
I didn’t give much thought to. Then I thought 15,000 books that must take up a huge amount of space, as I know our fairly spacious office holds around 5,000 books. Although I have to admit, that they are not all thin paperback like the penguin books…but with modern houses getting smaller where are people going to find space to store all the books?
Personally I have a collection of W.E. Johns books at home which must run upto 300 books, plus about 100 general titles and I am completely out of room on my bookcases and the books are spilling everywhere. So how many books does the average household have? Well I know it will vary from 1 or 2, including the phone book, to many thousands, so taking a straw pole around the office, I got an average off 400 books. However as they all work in a bookshop I would call them “book” people therefore I would guess the average must by around 250 books. How do you compare?
