Rare Monmouthshire Topography Books

Tintern Abbey

Tintern Abbey

It was a great pleasure when we managed to purchase a recent collection of Welsh topography books, which included so of the rarest and most beautiful book on Monmouthshire.  The highlight for me is THE CASTLES AND ABBEYS OF MONMOUTHSHIRE written and illustrated by J.S. Prout.  It contains 30 lithograph plates comprising: Tintern (4), Llangibby, Chepstow (4), Raglan (3), Monmouth, Goodrich (2), Grosmont, Skenfrith, Whitecastle, Llantony Abbey (3), Usk (2), Caerleon, Newport, Pen Y Coed, Penhow, Striguil, Llanvair & Caldicot.  We Believed that only 100 copies printed in 1838. This book must be high on the list for any collector of

Monmouthshire or topography books, and indeed I would love it in my collection; however this sort of rareness and quality does come at a price.  I also think you would need a very large bookcase, as the book is almost 2 foot high! but this just adds to the impressiveness of the  lithographs.

Another treat recently added is a 1796 edition of The History of Monmouthshire by David Williams, Illustrated and Ornamented by Views of its Principal Landscapes, Ruins and Residences by John Gardnor,Vicar of Battersea, engraved by Mr. Gardnor and Mr. Hill. Printed by H. Baldwin. Containing 36 Aquatint plates plus map.

There will be many book quality books to come over the next few months, but I don’t believe there are many as impressive as these two.
