September 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to the September 2023 newsletter from Stella and Rose's Books. The aim of our newsletter is to keep you informed of new information, articles and books available on our website.

As always, we hope this newsletter finds you and your families well. We hope you've all survived the recent heatwave (if you're in the UK)!

With the children returning to school after the summer holidays, the shop is a little quieter. Possibly a good time to come and visit us for a long browse? In other news, the Wye Valley Greenway tunnel will be closing for the annual bat hibernation period at the end of the month. So if you haven't had the chance to walk or cycle this beautiful route, now's your opportunity! One final note... due to staff shortages the shop will be closed on Sunday 24th September.

I think that's all our news so we'll keep this short and sweet! Enjoy the articles this month... Bernice recounts her recent holiday to the USA; Theresa takes a fascinating look at The Secret Language of Churches.

Trip to America contributed by Bernice

I recently went to the USA to visit my family in Houston, Texas whom I had not seen for nine years. As with so many others I had planned a trip in 2020 which had to be postponed.

It was a fairly laid-back holiday as Dad is getting on in years, so nothing energetic was on the cards, which is just as well as the lead up to the trip was a whole other adventure...

The Secret Language of Churches & Cathedrals by Richard Stemp contributed by Theresa

A few years ago I went to a talk given by Matthew Rice at the Cheltenham Literature Festival. The talk was about describing architecture and the language we use to do so. He said it is not enough, or indeed accurate, to describe something we see as that ‘twiddly bit on top of the curved thing below the window’ - we need to learn the language! So, there is a language for everything from Bricklaying to Churches and Cathedrals. It felt quite revelatory at the time but also quite obvious. The talk was excellent by the way, and I am now the proud owner of Rice’s Church Primer.

It was that talk that led me to choose to write about this book. I wanted to see what mysteries and language were new to me, hopefully it will interest you too!
